According to TodoAlicante, Alicante's updated health map provides for four new health centres (centros de salud): San Gabriel, La Condomina, Garbinet and La Torreta. Investment by the regional government (Generalitat) in the overhaul exceeds €30m. The city's population is above 330,000, and the source points to growth of around 10% a year. The source says three of the centres are already being built, with San Gabriel joining them last. Its own description, however, points to work under way only at Garbinet and La Torreta, while work at La Condomina has not yet started.
On San Gabriel, the town hall's local government board (Junta de Gobierno Local) on Tuesday 27 October approved handing a building on calle Pedreguer to the regional health department (Conselleria de Sanidad). The transfer uses an arrangement called mutación demanial externa. The building covers 1,963 m² and was formerly a supermarket, which the town hall bought in 2024. Town hall and regional specialists have checked that it is suitable for conversion. The town hall's property department (Concejalía de Patrimonio) chose this arrangement, and under it the property returns to the town hall if it ends up not being used for public healthcare.
La Condomina health centre is planned for avenida Locutor Vicente Hipólito and is meant to serve about 21,000 residents of Playa de San Juan. The built area will be around 3,500 m², with a basement and two floors. Work was planned for after the summer but has not yet started. The source considers a start inevitable following the tender. According to the project, the centre will have:
- a reception area;
- family medicine (eight doctors' rooms and the same number for nurses);
- paediatrics (four doctors' rooms and two paediatric nursing rooms);
- preventive dentistry;
- areas for women's health and advanced wound care;
- a blood-test and treatment area;
- a rehabilitation unit with physiotherapy and a gym;
- an urgent care point (punto de atención continuada, PAC);
- an administrative area.
Work at Garbinet began in February (the source does not give the year). The build period is 18 months, and opening is planned for the end of 2027. The centre is designed for roughly 20,000 people, most of whom are currently assigned to the Hospital Provincial-Pla health centre and the district's auxiliary centre. Estimated investment is about €7m, on a 2,900 m² plot. The three-storey building will house general medicine (eight family doctors' rooms and six nursing rooms), preventive dentistry, women's health (a midwife's room and a health education room) and social work. The second floor will have a rehabilitation unit with a gym, a physiotherapy room, electrotherapy booths and changing rooms, plus a library and an administrative area.
La Torreta may be the furthest advanced: the source says work is going well and the building's frame is going up. The €14m centre is designed for more than 16,000 residents of La Torreta (Pau 2), Juan Pablo Segundo (Pau 1) and neighbouring areas. It will offer rehabilitation, sexual and reproductive health, family medicine, paediatric dentistry, mental health, help with addictive behaviours, minor surgery, a PAC urgent care point, a blood-test and treatment area and an administrative area.
Separately, the regional health department says the expansion of A&E (urgencias) at Doctor Balmis University General Hospital is complete. The area has grown from 2,900 m² to more than 6,200 m², at a cost of €7m. It now has observation rooms, CT scanning (TAC) and centralised ultrasound, and staffing has been increased. A new building for the Isabial research institute, costing €13.3m, is under construction, and a full renovation of Santa Faz health centre on calle Gerona is being designed. The source does not give the cost of La Condomina or San Gabriel, opening dates for those two centres and La Torreta, or the number of residents and services for San Gabriel.
