Austrian Airlines will not operate direct Alicante-Vienna flights in the summer 2027 season, and the route will end. The news was reported on 26 October by the specialist website Aeropuerto Alicante-Elche and picked up by Información. It affects Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (El Altet). The airline's decision to drop Alicante is part of a review of its 2027 flight programme, which also ends its flights to Palermo, Marseille and Zagreb.

The airline, part of Lufthansa Group, resumed the route on 1 April 2026. It had not flown to Alicante since 2004, a gap of 22 years, and announced its return in November 2025. Flights used Airbus A320 aircraft with 174 passengers and ran twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Ryanair will keep its direct Alicante-Vienna service, with six flights a week in summer 2027, and will become the only airline operating direct flights on the route. Between Alicante and Bratislava, about 60 km from Vienna, there will be up to eight flights a week, operated by Ryanair and Wizz Air. There were no direct flights on that route in 2025.

There is no official confirmation yet from Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa Group or the airport. The reasons for the decision and the date of the last flight have not been given.
