Resurfacing the carriageway of Major del Pla is the final stage of the work to renovate and modernise the street. According to Alicante Plaza, it begins on Monday 2 November. The street will be closed to traffic during the following week while the work is under way, as confirmed by Claudio Guilabert, the town hall's councillor for public services.
New asphalt will be laid between calle Gabriel Miró and the Puente de Santa Teresa, including the area around the statue of Cantó. Milling (removal of the old road surface) across the whole carriageway began on Friday 30 October. Guilabert said the work will be carried out during working hours, to reduce disruption for drivers at the busiest times of day.
The renovation project included improved pavement accessibility, new trees, upgraded street lighting and the burying of overhead cables. The town hall says the work on the carriageway should also make the road safer.
The Major del Pla job is part of the municipal resurfacing programme (Plan de Asfaltado), which will continue in other parts of the municipality over the coming weeks. The road surface has already been renewed on avenida de la Comunitat Valenciana and calle José María Buck. Next week the town hall plans to resurface avenida de Jubalcoi, after which the work will move to various outlying districts of Elche (pedanías).
The report does not give an exact date for the street to reopen, a diversion plan, or details of the effect on buses and parking. It also does not say whether the street will be closed round the clock or only during working hours.
