Orihuela Town Hall has transplanted about 100 palms to fill gaps in the Palmeral Histórico, the historic palm grove that is part of the town's heritage. The work was carried out by the town hall's environment department (Concejalía de Medio Ambiente), headed by Noelia Grao. The palms came from the municipal nursery (vivero municipal).
The new plantings mean palms will again stand where they had been lost, while keeping the look of the landscape consistent. According to the town hall, filling the gaps gradually helps renew the generations of palms, which is needed to preserve the Palmeral's traditional structure and character. The transplanting is part of the usual work to conserve and maintain the Palmeral Histórico.
The Palmeral Histórico forms part of the municipality's natural, historic and landscape heritage and is described as a cultural landscape tied to Orihuela's history and identity. Keeping it in good order takes regular care, monitoring of the trees' condition and replacement of palms lost for various reasons. The town hall has not said exactly when the work was done, which areas of the Palmeral were replanted, or whether more planting is planned.
