Torrevieja Town Hall has approved a project to demolish the illegal roundabout on avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, opposite the IES Las Lagunas secondary school, according to Información. The resolution is dated 21 September 2026 and was signed by Sandra Sánchez, the councillor for urban planning management, accessibility and urban services. The project was submitted by the company CM Proyectos e Instalaciones 2017 SL under a small contract (contrato menor).

The roundabout was built in 2006 on public land. The work was carried out by Jost, the developer of sector 13-A-3, with the town hall's permission. This meant no urbanisation land had to be used, and the commercial area gained an access road. In 2012 the town hall opened an urban planning disciplinary case (expediente de disciplina urbanística) because the roundabout was illegal. The company that built it then took the town hall to court.

The court treated the town hall as the owner of the roundabout, because the work was formally accepted in 2006. It held the town hall responsible for restoring planning legality and for paying for the demolition. The cost of demolition was put at €148,000 in 2017.

In 2019 the town hall drew up the technical project for removing the roundabout using its own staff and began the process of contracting the works. According to the public procurement portal (Portal de Contratación del Sector Público), the procedure has not moved beyond the tender notice of June 2019, and no later documents appear.

Información reports that the roundabout has caused numerous accidents since it opened, and in one of them a vehicle ended up inside the school grounds. It is very small for a four-lane avenue. It sits about two metres above the level of the school and narrows the school's service road. On the approach towards Torrevieja centre, a double crash barrier is bent from vehicle impacts. Pupils use the area around the roundabout, which is covered with artificial grass and lies a few metres from the road.

The paper also says road safety along the avenue has improved over the years, thanks to measures to curb speeding.

The source does not say when demolition will start, what it will now cost, who will carry it out or what will replace the roundabout.
